End of another school year, and some more time to reflect on my practices and what worked and didn’t work.

As always, I asked all my students and received feedback from a large majority of them (via an assignment). Not everyone turned them in, but alas such is life.

Getting 30 new computers next year! 25 of the ones Engineering will be getting and 5 decked out ready to go for VR. 5 Oculus Quests. New classroom that can seat 30 compared to my current barely-fit-squeezing 20. Excited to design the classroom. I really want to grow this program to become 1) the best in CCISD 2) the best in Houston 3) the best in Texas.

I think the year went pretty well. One thing I want to continue to improve on is showing my students the learning process - modeling it with my everyday life. That could be taking weekly video clips of me learning something (linux, networking, visual novel genre, dancing) and showing what I have learned.


Goals

  • Mandate every student find a mentor outside (they can interact with this mentor however they want: more frequent, more guided, etc)

Reflections for each class

Video Game Design

Everyone said they loved the physical, table top game creation as well as working in teams (complaints about teams though). Someone commented they did not enjoy presenting in front of people but they understood the importance of it. Some said the board game portion lasted too long. For Unity, I had a lot of comments about having to watch the videos and the tediousness of programming it.

I am glad people liked the table top game portion. I plan on keeping it. Teams were randomly chosen by me at beginning and then students could choose their teams - I will keep this as well. Students need to learn how to form teams they want to work with and to not tolerate leachers. I will keep the presentations. I will most likely shorten the board game portion; I will do this by either taking out challenges or perhaps by alternating group challenges with class-wide challenges with a discussion followed by a challenge followed by students all doing the same challenge. I think I will do it the second way because the topics covered in those challenges are very important. Maybe I will ask for the library again for those weeks so students can have ample space? But wait - I have a new classroom next year! More on that later.

For Unity - I really enjoy the Create with Code curriculum, but for students who have never done any programming it can be hard. Last year I used GDevelop but felt it was too limiting, and I also wanted students to use an industry standard. I think I will stick with Unity. However, I will give students a lot more options perhaps. One thing I could do is pace it out longer - we don’t have to get through the entire Create with Code curriculum (but UHCL game competition is in March and they wouldn’t start Unity until November earliest… but game competition is secondary to student learning). I could enhance it with lectures, activities to practice coding, and more. Basic, simple things I would do in my programming classes. Another thing I could do is add an art component. I would have to teach myself Blender, though we could start with pixelart and I could introduce students to other programs (looking at you asperite). Maybe Unreal Engine? I have a friend using that right now - I’ll ask her for some tips on getting started with it and if she thinks it would be viable for high school.

One of my middle/high school friends who works as a game designer sat in on a presentation (more on this in IS: CS section) - I will make sure to repeat his advice of paper prototype and playtesting. I tried to emphasize it a lot this year but I think it fell on deaf ears. Maybe create a (t)rap remix of my friend saying that and loop it while students are working?

Mr. Wang, thank you for an amazing school year that was sadly cut short. The least I can do as a student is to express my appreciation by saying a thank you as teachers >don’t receive the recognition they deserve. Mr. Wang, thank you for opening my mind to programming. Before being involved with technology, I wasn’t as interested in the subject of coding because of its >complications and difficulty. However, I was still fascinated by the complex computer languages. Once I found out that my uncle works as a computer programmer, it gave >me the vision and motivation to follow his steps in that career. With the help of a great teacher, I feel I’ve finally have moved into something I enjoy and received the >guidance to accomplish my goals. Hi Mr. Wang, It’s teachers appreciation week and I wanted to say how much I enjoyed having your class and learning about video game design. This class had made me appreciate all the > small things about video games, and has sparked an interest in video game design altogether. Even when school is let out for summer, I will see if I can design my own video game and maybe even publish my game onto Steam or other video game launchers like Epic. AP Computer Science Principles

I am not sure I want to stick with the Mobile CSP curriculum. I used to think it was really cool students could programs apps, but the tablets we have (and even the emulator software) is unreliable at best. Code.org is better funded and seems to have more engaging activities/resources to use. I believe I will use this next year. I will miss Mobile CSP and it’s very easy to use curriculum. I will probably pull stuff out from there when I deem Code.org not suitable enough. I also am thankful I am learning networking on the side so I can better explain the networking portions.

Students didn’t really like the POGIL activities. They actually wanted to switch seats more often to force them to work with different people and cooperate with different working styles. Students also reported the tests as being too hard/much/long throughout the school year. I adjusted each time but there are only so many units and so much material. Maybe cut down tests into two parts.

Mr. Wang, thank you for teaching my favorite subject and for being one of the most generous teachers I know (I’m regret that I didn’t take CS A last year haha, it would > have been fun with you as my teacher)!

CP   Yes, I would. I learned to look at the applications and programs we use every day differently through this course (I can compare it to how Music Theory changed how I listen to music). I wish I love computer science and was just good at it but I realize now that there are a multitude of resources out there to learn/explore cs on my own. I acknowledge its importance in the modern world and especially in the field I am going into, Statistics and Data Science. Therefore, this class was valuable for me personally and I would recommend this class to anyone who uses technology regularly, which is like everyone.

One of the things that I enjoyed this year was the interactions in the classroom. I enjoyed the creative tasks that we had, because I get to choose the things that I do, and I enjoy doing stuff that I like and creating stuff based. Things to make the class better is make the students introduce themselves to each other because I think whenever you work with people you work better if things aren’t that weird and you kind of know the person.

AP Computer Science A

A lot of students said they liked the Josephus lab, Picture lab (accidental super hilarious filters), the making of cookies (intro to Objects), and most coding assignments. They enjoyed my Youtube videos. Tests were iffy (scarred from my Syntax test) and students overall did not like the Inheritance labs provided by College Board. I understand their sentiment about the Inheritance labs - it was hard to get them started on another unit remotely, and then College Board says we don’t have to learn it.

Many students said they wanted a faster pace - perhaps survey bias. However I would agree with them - I slowed the pace down and even spent more time on sections than usual for some students who really did not have the work ethic to be in the class. We were a whole month behind last year’s pace. Another suggestion was to make the worksheets an actual grade; the student proposed giving paper handouts for basic worksheets and making it a required grade (for at least the first few units) to make sure people understand the very basics. Additionally, we could still grade them in class by turning them in and passing them back out to random people. The suggestions includes how to avoid grade inflation - by making all of the worksheets for a unit average for a quiz grade.

More on grades: another student suggested changing the way I did re-takes on quizzes. Before, I used to allow students to do corrections to get 1/2 back of what they missed. So if a student got a 60, students could do corrections to get up to an 80 (20 points back) depending on how much they accurately corrected. Students took advantage of this by not really understanding the material, asking friends for help, and copying verbatim what they said and submitting it. I countered this by allowing students to do a retake on their quiz for up to a 100 - however the 2nd grade would stick no matter what. Students had access to the first quiz to study from. However, many of the students who needed it did not end up taking this option (because?) and some great students didn’t either for fear of a lower grade. To counteract this, I will try giving students an average of their two scores.

Just general coding in class and the board games we played on half days or days with pep rally or something. It was nice since my class had a very relaxed environment, > and coding in general was fun with the classmates and teacher I had. I know this is probably not possible, but keeping the pace of the class at what is supposed to be would be nice, but I know you have to consider those who are not really suited or trying in the class. You should keep making YouTube videos!

My favorite thing was honestly the labs. Because they challenged me to think outside the box with the content we were learning, but were still feasible given the information we knew. The only thing I could ask for is a little more clarity on when an assignment is assigned and due. Nothing new, other than I really appreciate these classes.

I never had a bad time in this class. My favorite assignment was probably the cookie making assignment, and my favorite general moment was beating everyone in Smash.

I really loved the cookie activity. I felt that it was a nice break from more vigorous learning methods, and it helped me understand the concept a little bit better. I > would have liked more opportunities for group work. In a real life setting, programmers often work in pairs in order to complete better work.

The filter labs, the bonus labs were super fun to figure out and when you messed up there typically wasn’t an error but rather a hilarious looking filter that you created accidentally. OR the frq practice because it made me feel prepared for the AP exam. Yes, this was my favorite class. I enjoy the challenge and think it is somewhat my hardest class, however it is applicable to my future occupation. Honestly, the practice FRQs were really helpful and the way you set them up encouraged me to actually do them because of the FRQ you would make at the end of the week. I feel like that was a good setup, and how you were doing the curriculum prior to Spring break was good as well. You prepared me well for the AP exam both in and out of quarantine.

I would say re-going over classes and objects (Ship, Monster). When we had started to learn it back in Pre-AP Comp. Sci. Principles, I really struggled with it. It was > a major relief/confidence boost when I got the hang of it this year. 2D Arrays was the Unit I struggled with the most. It was tricky to keep track of 2 separate arrays > and what aspect of change each array represented. The worst example of this was the Java Image Lab. There were certain rules that each filter followed, and it was difficult trying to figure whether you had to change the row or the column. I suggest using videos that go over the topic discussed. Maybe you could go over/show solutions to example problems that deal it as well. Yes; while there were definitely some ups and downs, I’m leaving this class knowing that I’ve added a new skill to my arsenal. You could have provided a brief insight into the upcoming unit by introducing us to the Celebrity Assignment early. That way we could be better associated with it. You should really follow through on that teach-switch with Mr. Zachow. It would be pretty interesting to your future students.

Independent Study: Computer Science

Had an awesome year with IS. We trained well and started UIL practice in Spring. We were sad about UIL canceling - yes it was online but I couldn’t make my students spend time doing that when they had other pressing matters to work on - but we all know we would have claimed 1st in District for the first time in Clear Springs High School history for CS! Region… hahah we still have a ways to go.

Liked:

  • Mix/match Data Structures/Algorithms with student personal project work time. Change:
  • Start Competitive Coding (UIL team) after school meetings earlier in the year; make sure to plan the curriculum so that my AP CS A students can also participate (starting with binary conversions)
  • Mandate every student find a mentor outside (they can interact with this mentor however they want: more frequent, more guided, etc)
  • Student presentations via video conference to mentor + two other professionals, recorded, every semester (even if year-long project? maybe not)
  • Data Structures and Algorithms course (UIL): practice quizzes/exams and make videos as needed

Unfortunately no quotes from them atm. May ask for them later. However, great students off to great things.

PreAP CS

Tried some new things this year. CMU CS Academy for a semester, Cyber Security topics for 3 weeks (co-taught some lessons with Mrs. Farrington of Forensics Science in the Library), Raspberry Pi projects w/ an introduction to Linux, Coronavirus (back to CMU CS Academy).

All in all, I think CMU CS Academy is a great introduction to programming. However, I would do things a bit differently. I probably would only use it for the 1st NW and maybe the 2nd NW. I would also set aside time to deliver instruction via lecture, activity/role-play, and more. I may transition to some of Armstrong’s Python stuff afterwards to introduce functions, conditionals, and loops - and then go back to CMU to reinforce. Data structures? Maybe. I think it would also be cool to embed Fluent Python and Automate the Boring Things within the curriculum. And for the Creative Tasks - do not allow students to reuse code from any past projects or exercises. Students did comment they wanted to switch around seats more often and go through some exercises to actually get to know their new seat-mate! It’s interesting how I interpret what I think they want versus what they tell me via private submission.

I do think Cybersecurity should be taught. Maybe via this link or NICERC activities. Less lecture more hands-on activities where students can both move around and actually play around with things in a sandbox environment.

And unfortunately due to Covid-19 we did not get to drones.
